Delhi Court Summons Dhruv Rathee in Defamation Case

YouTube Sensation Dhruv Rathee in the Midst of Defamation Controversy

Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesman Suresh Karamshi Nakhua has filed a defamation lawsuit in response to remarks made in a YouTube video by youtuber Dhruv Rathee. The controversy started from a video titled “My Reply to Godi YouTubers | Elvish Yadav | Dhruv Rathee,” posted on July 7, 2024, by YouTuber Dhruv Rathee. In the video, Rathee allegedly labelled Nakhua as a violent and abusive troll, an assertion Nakhua claims is baseless and damaging to his reputation.

Nakhua’s lawsuit, which also names Google LLC and X Corp (formerly known as Twitter) as other defendants, argues that the defamatory statements in the video have caused significant harm to his reputation. On July 19, 2024, Ld. District Judge Gunjan Gupta of the Saket Court in Delhi issued summonses to Dhruv Rathee and others involved. The court date for this matter is set for August 6, 2024. Legal representatives Raghav Awasthi and Mukesh Sharma are advocating on behalf of the plaintiff, Nakhua.

The Nakhua’s legal action also includes a request for a permanent injunction against Rathee, preventing him from creating, sharing, or disseminating any content that could be construed as defamatory or harmful to Nakhua or the BJP. Additionally, Nakhua seeks ₹20,00,000 in damages for the slanderous remarks and the distress caused by them. He has also requested a lifelong order prohibiting Rathee from contacting him or any of his colleagues.

This case underscores the growing tension between public figures and digital content creators, highlighting the legal challenges and implications of online speech. The outcome of this lawsuit could have significant ramifications for content creators and the boundaries of free speech in the digital age. As the court date approaches, all eyes will be on the Saket Court to see how this case unfolds and the precedents it might set for future defamation claims in the digital sphere.
